Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Agitations to lengthen Harvard's traditionally short Christmas vacations have been afoot recently, both among the student body and in the Student Council, it was revealed yesterday.
Two petitions have been circulating among members of the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman classes, which ask that next year's recess be at least two weeks in length. These petitions state that nearly all institutions of learning in the country have a longer holiday than Harvard. They also point out that Harvard students are unable to attend many lectures, social events, and meetings given for students on vacation. According to the petitioners, some of the single day holidays during the year may be converted into an addition to the Christmas-New Year recess, without disobeying any State or National laws on the observance of holidays.
Members of the Faculty and the Student Council, as well as one of the assistant deans, have expressed their approval of the proposed change. Following is a comparison of the vacations just finished at several Eastern colleges and universities: Harvard, 11 days; Amherst, 15 days; Cornell, 15 days; Dartmouth, 13 days; Maine, 17 days; Middlebury, 19 days; New Hampshire, 18 days; Princeton, 19 days; Tufts, 14 days; Trinity, 13 days; Yale, 13 days; Williams, 13 days.
