FOOTBALL MEN PLAY IN FREQUENT SCRIMMAGES

With the first week of football practice drawing to a close, Coach Edward L. Casey '19 has been giving his squad daily scrimmages in addition to signal drills and conditioning exercises in his efforts to build up a team to take the place of last year's veteran outfit. Since only three of the 1932 regulars have returned this fall, the opening game with Bates will see an entirely new team take the field.

There is an unusually large field of fairly promising material to choose from, but it seems doubtful if a top-rank halfback can be found to take the place of Crickard, and, for that matter, it will be difficult to develop linemen capable of filling Hardy's and Hallowell's shoes.

This year Casey has retained a squad of 57, which is considerable larger than usual. Norman Fradd, director of Physical Education, has been giving the entire squad daily exercises to get the men in condition and toughen them up, in order to avoid the injuries that were so fatal to the 1932 team. The first scrimmage was held on Tuesday and a second one yesterday afternoon.

Most noteworthy in yesterday's scrimmage was the trial of Leon A. Francisco '34 at left tackle. In yesterday's tryout, however, Eddy J. Rogers '34 returned to the tackle position. Next to the problem of finding a first-string tackle is that of discovering a center to take Hallowell's place. At present, Francis J. Crane '34 is occupying the berth.
