When President Lowell stepped from the room in which the Corporation was holding its meeting to the adjoining Faculty Room in University Hall where the Overseers were convening, he carried the following message: "The Harvard Corporation was today given authority by the Board of Overseers to elect, subject to the confirmation of the Board, a president of Harvard College. Acting on this authority, the Corporation today elected James Bryant Conant, Sheldon Emery Professor of Organic Chemistry. The Overseers will meet on June 21 to act on the confirmation." The result was then given to the News Office.
