"College is not an interlude, but a boundless opportunity," says President Lowell in the Freshman Red Book which is published this morning. His message to the Class continues, "its rules, its requirements, its methods, are not a discipline, but means of flxing attention upon the opportunities, and of leading men to seize them.
"So far as they (Concentraton, etc.) attain the result they are good, but for those unaffected thereby they are a wasteful failure. They are not devices of ingenious mechanism, but aids to the student in obtaining that for which he comes, or ought to come, here; and still more in providing the community with the body of serious educated men which justifies the foundation of a college."
Several pages are devoted to the retiring President's administration here. This section includes several pictures of him which have not been hitherto released. In a short article commenting on the selection of Dr. Conant for the Presidency, the following comments are made:
Confidence in Conant
"We are confident that the admirable plans introduced by President Lowell, which are still in their infancy, will be stabilized and perfected to an even greater extent in the coming years. Professor Conant is becoming President of one of the greatest universities in the country at a critical time. Just now when the aims of education are under such close scrutiny, Harvard needs a man of broad perspective and one who is acquainted with the problems facing the world today--another strong leader. The great constructive ideas of Eliot and Lowell have made this college a world famous center of learning. It remains for President-elect Conant to interweave the comparatively recent innovations with the traditions and time established policies into a perfect unit. President elect Conant has shown himself to be a strong man up to this point in his career; he will continue his achievements because he is an astute and quick thinker; he has liberal ideas, a sound judgment, and an interest in other fields besides his own."
Larger Than Last Year
The only other two articles in the book not dealing directly with the history of the Class are: "The Harvard Odyssey," a poem, and "Biddy versus Slumber," a playlet. Although every attempt has been made to keep this year's Red Book as short as possible, it is several pages longer than last year's issue due to the size of the Freshman Class. It is expected that the book will be a financial success if all the subscriptions which have been pledged are paid for.
Copies may be obtained today at the entrance of the Dining Room in the Union. The first hundred subscribers have had their names inscribed in gold on the cover, and 12 books, which have been drawn by lot are autographed by President Lowell. Since 25 extra copies have been ordered, it is still possible for a few late subscribers to obtain copies.
Derie Nusbaum '36, Editor-in Chief of the Red Book, has directed the work. R. W. Drury '36 is Editorial Chairman, A. A. Bliss '36, Business Manager, J. G. Rogers, Art Chairman, and B. C. McDonald, Photographic Chairman.
