VARSITY NETMEN SWAMP AMHERST IN FIRST MEET

In the opening match of its season, the Harvard Varsity tennis team swamped Amherst 9-0 Saturday afternoon at the Divinity Courts in Cambridge.

The results of the singles matches are as follows: S. E. Davenport '34 defeated W. F. Owen (A) 6-0, 6-2; Richard Inglis Jr. '33 defeated E. O. Merchant (A) 6-1, 6-2; G. H. Hartford '34 defeated R. S. Clifton (A) 2-6, 8-6, 6-4; W. E. Arensberg '33 defeated P. B. Lyster (A) 6-3, 6-3; J. F. Ray '34 defeated S. C. Limerick (A) 6-0, 7-5; and F. W. Jones, Jr. '35 defeated J. A. Shields (A) 6-0, 6-1.

In the doubles Arensberg and Inglis defeated Merchant and Owen 6-2, 6-3; F. P. Whitbeck '35 and J. K. Mitchell '34 defeated Lyster and Limerick 7-9, 6-8, 6-4; and Jones and Wilkinson (A) defeated Shields and Clifton 6-2, 6-2.

Freshman and Junior Varsity tennis teams will engage in a match at 2.30 o'clock this afternoon.

The Freshman players will be: A. C. Helmholz, R. W. Gilder, G. G. Glidden, J. A. Roberts, G. S. Franklin, A. C. Reggio, L. S. Shaw, R. L. Bentley, J. F. Donovan.

The Junior Varsity players will be: F. P. Whitbeck '35, F. W. Jones, Jr. '35, W. E. Ingalls '35, M. P. Richmond '34, J. K. Mitchell '34, M. McMichael '33, S. Rodman '35, W. S. Emmett '34, E. A. Wye '34.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Varsity team will play its second match of the season with the Tech netmen on the Divinity Avenue Courts, and on Saturday will travel to Princeton for the first match away from home. The important match with North Carolina comes on Friday afternoon May 5.
