STUDENT APPLICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT GAIN

786 Students Seek Aid of Employment Office, Increase of 100 Over Last Year's Applications

Seven hundred eighty-six students already have registered with the Student Employment Office for the coming year, according to Russell T. Sharpe '28, Secretary for Student Employment. This is about 100 more men than were registered with the Office at the same time last year.

In commenting upon this figure, Sharpe said, "It seems unlikely that we shall have more registrants this year than last, when about 1900 students filed applications with our office. I believe the increase at the present time is largely due to a tendency upon the part of needy men to register earlier this Fall. The tendency, in turn, apparently is due to the fact that the average man needs to earn more money this year than last. This seems to indicate that the savings of many families are almost exhausted."

Sharpe said that some of the jobs which his force had accured during the early part of September have been discontinued owing to the recession in business activity during the past ten days.

The usual number of men have been placed this year in positions as room for service employees, waiters, bus boys, chauffeurs, secretaries and chore men.
