President Conant's inspection of the University led him into unexpected paths last night. Following a suggestion of Roger B. Merriman '96, Master of Eliot House, Mr. Conant listened attentively, not exactly at keyholes, but through Eliot's thin walls and fire-doors, while 20 residents of the House looked on.
It all began with Professor Merriman's remarks in welcoming the President at a House dinner. Said the well-known Master of Eliot: "I want you (the students) to show Mr. Conant the House. Show him our walls, without any portraits. Show him the fireplace in our dining hall, without anything with which to build a fire. Show him how well you can hear through the thin partitions in our rooms. But treat him carefully, for he is very precious. And return him to the Master's lodgings within the hour."
