J. H. ROPES, THEOLOGIAN, AUTEOR, DIES SATURDAY

James Harvey Ropes '89. Hollis Professor of Divinity and Dexter Lecturer on Biblieal Literature, died at his home H. Follen Street, Cambridge, Saturday night shortly after 11 o'clock. He had been ill for several months.

Professor Ropes was born in Salem and September 3, 1866. He studied at Harvard from 1885 to 1889. In 1889 he graduated from Andover Theological Seminary, and received the degree of Doctor of Sacred Theology in 1898. His connection with the faculty at Harvard began in 1896 when he became instructor in New Testament Criticism and Interpretation. He served as Bussey Professor from 1903 for 1910 when he became the incumbent of the Hollis chair. He was appointed Dean in charge of University Extension from 1910 to 1922 and Dean of Special Students from 1916 to 1922. His clubs included the Colonial and the Harvard Club of Boston, and he was a Fellow of the American Academy of Aris and Sciences and a member of the American Oriental Society and the Archaeological institute of America.

Surviving him are his wife an two children. Harriet and Edward Jackson Lowell Ropes. Services will be held at 12' o'clock tomorrow in the Memorial Church.
