NEW TWO-MILE COURSE ON CHARLES IS PLANNED

Construction Work, Filling in Basin, Expected To Aid Crews -- Rough Water Will Be Greatly Eliminated

Pressing need to alter the mile and three quarters course hitherto used by the Varsity and Jayvee crews in their home spring races has resulted in the planning of a new two-mile course extending from the Cottage Farm Bridge to the lower extremity of the Basin.

The construction work in connection with the building of the addition to the Esplanade has caused an unfavorable condition for racing in the Charles River Basin and forced the crews to such a change in their course. In the past rough water in the Basin has caused the postponement of many regattas

These changes will not affect the Benley course, the official course, for the Freshman and the 150 pound crews. A mile and a half in length this begins just below the Cottage Farm Fridge and runs downstream along the Cambridge side of the river to a point parallel with the M.I.T. gymnasium. Coach Charles Whiteside has not definitely concluded to abandon the old course entirely but at least the men one will be of real value in conditioning the Varsity for the four mile Yale classic at New London on June '14.
