Wood Leads Harvard Batting With .491 Average as Entire Team Hits .300--Devens Has 109 Strikeouts in 78 Innings

Harvard's baseball team has averaged almost an even .300 in batting this spring, compared with an average of only .159 made by opponents in games against the Crimson. Out of 503 times at bat the team has pounded out a total of 151 safe hits.

The work of Wood and Mays has done much to raise Harvard's average to its present level. Wood has hit more consistently and more effectively than any other member of the nine. In 57 chances at bat he has made 28 hits for a season's record of .491. Four times he has knocked out doubles, as well as two three-base hits and two homers. Mays is the other member of the team hitting over .400. He has hit 24 times for a score of .421. Sprague and Gleason are both batting .500. The former, however, was at bat only four times and the latter 10.

Devens and Lupien are the only other members of the Harvard lineup to hit over .300. Devens has shown a keen batting eye this spring to average .333. Captain Lupien started the season well, but lately he has gone into a bad slump. His score remains at .309, but in the second Brown game he relinquished his position as fourth man in the batting order to Devens. The averages for the other members of the team are as follows: Gleason .261, McCaffrey .259, Sheldon .255, Adams .250, Fincke .234, Ware .200, Thacher .187, Taylor .111, Lockwood, Valeuski, and Jantzen .000.

Devens' pitching has done much to keep the batting averages of his opponents from rising. In the 78 innings he has pitched this year he amassed an amazing record of 109 strike-outs, which amounts to almost three strike-outs every two innings. In every game he has pitched he has retired men this way with surprising regularity. He has been touched for 34 hits and has walked 33 opponents.
