SLOPPY BALL TEAM GOES DOWN BEFORE BROWN NINE, 4 TO 3

Infield Fails To Back Up Taylor During Critical Moments--Faces Unbeaten Rhode Island State Tomorrow

Following its brilliant display of inspired baseball in winning over Columbia on Saturday, the Crimson nine yesterday staged as discouraging a comedown as four fatal errors can produce, and went down to a 4 to 3 defeat before a slightly better Brown team. Brown took advantage of every slip by the Crimson in the second game of a series which the Cambridge outfit was expected to carry off like the first.

The psychological factor, over-confidence, was no doubt the varsity stumbling block. On Wednesday the Harvard team handed the Bears a 5 to 2 defeat, and that without much effort. Saturday saw Charles Devens, as one-man ball team, aided by other members of the squad, notably Wood and his long distance home run clout, administer Columbia a fitting revenge for an early season upset, 8 to 3. But yesterday the genius of Devens was absent from the pitchers box, and the infield which usually supports him so well collapsed behind the adequate pitching of Taylor. Devens played in centre field and hit the only double of the contest.

In the first frame Brown put over a run when Harris scored on Woods wild throw to Fincke, who has exchanged his catcher's berth for Sheldon's customary first sack job. Lupien evened the score in the next inning on Fincke's infield drive. The Bruins tallied twice in the fourth, with the help of two singles and a criminal overthrow by Sheldon but Harvard got a brace of runs in the sixth, resulting from a neat drive by McCaffrey. Harris opened up for the Providence nine in the eighth inning, rolling a grounder through Mays at second, and scored the winning run on Kroeger's heroic single.
