FRESHMAN CREWS HOLD STIFF DAILY PRACTICE

Heavyweight Boatings Remain Almost Unchanged -- Additional 150-Pound Eight Put on River

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In the element weather during the past week the Freshman heavyweight and 150-pound crews have been going through stiff daily practices on the Charles under the direction of Coach Haines.

Another crew has been added to the lightweight squad, while the original three heavyweight shells have remained practically intact except for minor seat changes within the boats. Although the heavyweight squad is now nearly stable and, few if any now men will be moved up from the division crews to displace present oarsmen, the 150-pounders are still only temporarily seated, and daily new rowers are shifted from the first division for trial spins down the river, so that it is difficult to state which is the first 150-pound crew at present.

The lightweights are somewhat handicapped by the fact that many of their best oarsmen are slightly overweight, but with not enough pound advantages to give them a berth in the heavyweight shells. The Division 1 rights three in number, contain many men who may prove good heavyweight and 150-pound material later in the season, but who lack experience now. Division 2 is largely composed of Freshmen who have never rowed before this spring. Approximately 120 first year men are now rowing in shells, while there are many who are working their way up from wherries to singles, so that altogether about 180 oarsmen are using Weld boat house as a base.

The Freshman heavyweight crews are now as follows:

First crew--Stroke, Johnston; 7, Davis; 6, Birge; 5, Saltonstall; 4, Kratovil; 3, Holbrook; 2, Lewis; Bow, Swasey; Cox, Cantelmo. Second crew--Stroke, Cutler; 7, Bray; 6, Dow; 5, Vanderveer; 4, Keyes; 3, Haberstroh; 2, Storey; Bow, Johnson; Cox, Hunter. Third boat--Stroke, Jordan; 7, Raff; 6, Brown; 5, Wade, 4, Cook; 3, Lowry; 2, Gleason; Bow, Mendenhal; Cox, Kelly.

The two listed permanent 150-pound shells are: First Crew--Stroke, Whitney; 7, Garfield; 6, Bill; 5, Brewster; 4, Nichols; 3, Herman; 2, Berrien; Bow, Hepburn; Cox, Harmon. Second Crew--Stroke, Jopling; 7, Simonds; 6, Nichols; 5, Pfaelzer; 4, Willis; 3, Prouty; 2, Bigelow; Bow, Mello; Cox, Russell
