NEW PHILOSOPHY COURSES WILL BE GIVEN NEXT YEAR

Announcement of changes and additions to be made in the Department of Philosophy for next year was made yesterday afternoon, by J. H. Woods '87, chairman of the department. Two new courses will be offered for the first time by W. E. Hocking '01, Alford Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy and Civil Polity, and by J. A. C. Auer, professor of Church History and Parkman Professor of Theology.

Professor Hocking is not teaching this year, but will return from Asia where he is making a study of the relations between the different religions principally in India and China. The committee with which he is connected is composed of Rufus Jones of Haverford, and former President Faunce of Brown. During the winter, sects in India have been studied, and at the present time the commission is at Hong-Kong, awaiting military developments before proceeding north to Peking. On the material gathered by this survey, Professor Hocking will base a course in Oriental Religion. He will also give a course in Metaphysics, Philosophy 9.

Auer Preparing New Course

Professor Auer, who is now delivering a series of Lowell lectures on Humanism, is outlining a new course on the Philosophy of History which will be given in the second half-year.

Philosophy A, which has profited by gradual condensation, will be further reduced so that three instead of four philosophers will be considered in the second half-year. Contrary to rumors, the course will still center around individual philosophers rather than movements.

Philosphy 1, half-year elementary course in Logic, this year under the direction of Dr. J. D. Wild, will be extensively revised and better text-books now in press will be used by Professor D. W. Prall, the second half of next year.

The course in ordinary Formal Logic, Philosophy Sa, which is now being given under Assistant Professor Eaton, will be taken next year by Professor C. I. Lewis.

While Professor R. B. Perry will take Philosophy A, the first half year, J. D. Wild and J. W. Miller '16, who is on leave this year, will supplant Assistant Professor Eaton in the second half year
