Autographed portraits of many notable Frenchmen are now on display in the Treasure Room of the College Library. They are the gift of M. Champion, a publisher and bookseller of Paris, received following his visit to the United States about a year ago.
Only one Harvard alumnus is included in the collection, Charles Cestre '98, although several of the men shown have visited Cambridge or deliver lectures here. Professor Meillet, who lectured last year on comparative philology, is prominent in the latter class.
Of particular interest are photographs of Marcel Pagnol, who wrote the French moving-picture "Marius" recently shown in the Geography Building, and of Andre Siegfried, who wrote "America Comes of Age." Other well-known authors represented are Andre Maurois, Jules Romains, and Jean Cocteau. Several Frenchwomen of letters are also shown, including Princess Bibesco and La Comptesse de Noailles.
