To a Certain Type of College Pr--Professor
(Suggested by the late Pleasantness)
Hail, ancient jokers, genial, hoary sinners,
Who break men's hearts to stimulate your dinners!
Whose fun, like frost, descends with killing blight
Of wintry malice, withering in a night Flower and fruitage of new enterprise; Dimming the light,
(Possibly over-bright)
In young ambition's visionary eyes.
Witty you are, and witty well may be,
As teachers. And it shall go hard but we
Will better the instruction, as you see!
I speak as one of those who also ran--
Who hold the faith, and do the best they can;
Of those long ridiculed, and long ignored,
Who, craving more humane consideration--
More fair and just, and kindly estimation, (Despite your shots of humorous venom, poured,)
Have fought for true sincerity,
For Veritas in verity,
And--maybe--scored! Elise Fellows White.
