VARSITY AND 1936 HARRIERS EASILY BEAT HOLY CROSS

Showing of Team Excellent in View of One Letter Man Left--Freshmen Win By 16-39 Score

With an unexpected show of strength, the University Cross Country Team defeated the Holy Cross harriers 17-38 on the Soldiers Field course yesterday afternoon. Nine Crimson runners placed in the first ten, with Captain Arthur Foote '33 leading the field. The Freshman harriers won their race against the Holy Cross first-year men by a score of 16 to 39, with R. S. Playfair '36 in first place.

Captain Foote and A. S. Pier '35, leader of last year's Freshman team, came in almost in a dead heat. E. F. Bowditch '35, another sophomore, followed about 50 yards behind them, closely pursued by Kenney, the sole Holy Cross man who placed in the first ten. Then came in order J. S. Hays '33, T. A. Robinson '34, E. S. Roys '35, John Wiggins '33, C. F. Woodard '35, and J. P. Scheu '35.

Two of the best harriers were unable to run yesterday, J. M. Estabrook '34 and James Parton '34, one with a sprained ankle and the other with a cold. The next meet is with M.I.T. this coming Friday, and it is expected that all the squad will be in condition then.

Coach Mikkola was pleased with his team's showing and declared that he thought the Sophomores had done especially well. He pointed out that the Freshmen should improve when they have had a little more distance running in their daily practice.
