As the members of the Class of 1935 begin their work for the new academic year, they will be under the guidance of an expanded and improved advisory organization directed by Delmar Leighton '17, newly created Dean of Freshmen. Important changes were the appointment last April of 12 faculty members as "Associates of the Freshmen" and the selection of eight instructors in Freshman courses to reside in the Yard.
The "Associates of the Freshmen" will advise and consult with administrative officers on matters relating to the Freshmen, especially on questions of instruction. They will also take occasional meals at the Union and thus come in contact with the first year men.
The group includes: L. B. R. Briggs '75, Professor Emeritus and former Dean of Harvard College; R. S. Hillyer '17, assistant professor of English; Leigh Hoadley, professor of Zoology; A. N. Holcombe '06, professor of Government; F. W. C. Lieder, associate professor of German; K. F. Mather, professor of Geology; L. S. Mayo '10, assistant dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; R. B. Merriman '96, professor of History; Henry Pennypacker '88, Chairman of the Committee on Admissions; F. W. Taussig '79, professor of Economics; R. DeC. Ward '89, professor of Climatology and present Chairman of the Board of Freshman Advisers; A. F. Whittem '02, associate professor of Romance Languages.
The instructors who are to reside in the Yard will make up a part of the regular Board of Freshman Advisers and will have charge of only a part of the first year men. In addition to their regular duties, however, they will consult with more of the Freshmen than they have as advisees. The instructors will take most of their meals at the Union.
The following are the instructors: Marcel Francon, instructor in French and tutor in the Division of Modern Languages; H. M. Smallwood, instructor in Chemistry; R. I. W. Westgate, instructor in Greek and Latin and tutor in the Division of Ancient Languages; G. B. Van Schaack '29, instructor in Mathematics and tutor in the Division of Mathematics; L. H. Butterfield '30, assistant in English; J. D. Gordon '30, assistant in English; K. M. Marshall '22, instructor in Government; F. W. Hoeing, instructor in History.
The appointment of these advisory officers and the creation of the office of Dean of Freshmen is a direct result of Dean Hanford's last annual report.
