8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
With only nine days remaining before the University crew entrains for Philadelphia, there to engage in a triple regatta with Navy and Pennsylvania on the following Saturday, Robert Saltonstall '33 was shifted from his old seat at number seven in the first boat yesterday, W. L. Thompson '32 now occupying that position. Thompson was captain of his Freshman crew, but was ineligible last year for the University squad. Since the beginning of practice this spring he has been rowing in the third shell, where Saltonstall was boated yesterday.
As this removal of Saltonstall from the first boat has occurred once before, and since the current opinion is that the stern combination of the first eight should be left intact, it is probable that the veteran of last year's Freshman crew will be seen again in his customary place behind Cassedy. The shakeup, however, leads to a suspicion that Whiteside was not too pleased with the showing of the first eight in the triple regatta last Saturday, and will endeavor to smooth out the Crimson craft before it enters the waters against a dangerous Navy eight.
The second Freshman crew is scheduled for a mile race against Groton School today on the Nashua. Stroked by A. M. Brown '34, last year's "Grotty" pace-setter, who led his crew in a defeat of Noble and Greenough School in the traditional encounter last spring, the junior shell has provided the firsts with unusual competition, according to Coach Haines. The lineup is as follows: Stroke, Brown; 7, Gridley Barrows '34; 6, W. S. Wellington '34; 5, J. H. Packard '34; 4, A. F. Chace, Jr. '34; 3, C. S. Denny '34; 2, J. A. Martin '34; Bow, D. C. Morris '34.
