JUNIOR OARSMEN WILL MEET YALE

Winners, With Higher Stroke, Keep Rivals in Rear From Start--1933 Boat Trails

In a race staged yesterday to determine which one of the upperclass crews shall meet the Yale championship eight on the Charles on May 23, a smoothly swinging Junior class boat stroked by A.H. Parker '32 left the Sophomore and Senior crews in the wash in the Charles River Basin, the race being rowed over the mile and three-quarters course. The winning oarsmen left the Seniors over a length and a half astern as they crossed the finish line, while the crew representing 1933 was to be seen nearly seven lengths to the rear.

With the Basin unusually placid and favorable for even rowing, the victorious oarsmen swept down the stretch to the finish flags in the fast time of 9 minutes, 58 seconds. Throughout the race the winning eight coordinated well, pulling a hard, fast stroke with little checking Parker setting his men to a long pull early in the race.

The three boats commenced the row at a beat of about 35, keeping together for the first leg of the stretch. In the first half of the race the Senior crew kept slightly in the lead, and rowed a trifle higher than the other two boats, who battled close on the heels of the leading crew. As the distance to the finish flags dwindled, however, the Juniors gradually pulled into the lead, and although continually pressed by the Senior boat, coasted across the finish with ample leeway over the 1931 men, while the second-year boat was lost in the grey mist.

The following is the seating of the winning crew: Stroke, A.H. Parker; 7, R.H. Svendsen; 6, J.W. Appel; 5, Eustis Walcott; 4, Desmond FitzGerald; 3, T.E. Covel; 2, Rockwell Kent, III; Bow, Beekman Pool; Cox, R.H. Watson, Jr.
