Announcement was made last night at the Harvard Athletic Association of the award to Samuel Lawrence Batchelder '31, of Boston, of the John Tudor Memorial Cup, which is made annually to some member of the Harvard hockey team. Batchelder played defense on the hockey team this winter.
The Tudor Cup was first awarded last spring, the recipient being Harwood Ellis '31, at a dinner tendered the hockey squad. A perpetual trophy, the Cup was given by W. L. Elkins '29, F. A. Clark '29, and W. T. Wetmore '30, and is awarded annually to "the player who is of greatest value to Harvard hockey, not so much because of his ability but because of his heart." The idea behind the award is to present this trophy not necessarily to the best player nor again to the hardest worker, but to the player who best exemplifies John Tudor's qualities. Tudor was captain of the 1928-29 sextet, having played three successive seasons, and was graduated a year ago last June. He was killed in an automobile accident in Fall River in the summer of 1929.
The award to Batchelder this year was made by a committee composed of University coach Joseph Stubbs '20, and former coaches Alfred Winsor '02 and E. L. Bigelow.
