With an extremely uninspiring record of but four victories out of nine starts, the University baseball forces will attempt to get back into the winning column this afternoon at 4 o'clock, when they act as hosts to the strong Colby aggregation, at Soldiers Field. Coach Mitchell of Harvard, in anticipation of what promises to be a strenuous game for his charges yesterday made a few changes in the lineup.
McGrath Back to Shortstop
Captain McGrath, who has been transplanted from infield to outfield, and back to shortstop, adding third base to his repertoire in last Saturday's fiasco with Syracuse, will return to the shortstop position this afternoon, while Mays, who covered this section of the diamond on Saturday, has been shifted to second base, in place of Kiernan, Sophomore ball-tosser who was slightly unsteady in the last contest. At third Mitchell hopes to reinstate DesRoches, veteran baseman who has been out of the game for some time due to a wrenched knee. DesRoches's absence from the infield has been keenly noticeable in recent games, as he is a fast, accurate fielder, and a dependable person with the willow, and if Mitchell is able to play him against the visitors form Maine it is likely that the infield will display a little more ginger than has been evidenced thus far this season.
If last year's regular third-sacker is unable to cover the hot corner, Mitchell will put in Rex, while Bassett will be used in right field, Rex's regular position. With DosRoches at third, Rex will be relegated to the outfield. Either MacHale or Page will be on the mound for Harvard, with Sheldon doing the catching. MacHale is gunning for his fifth victory of the season, while the Crimson backstop will be out to improve on his showing of Saturday, when he seemed hard put to it to handle Devens's fast ones, two of the pitches going for passed balls.
In addition to shaking up the lineup. Mitchell has also made up a new bating order, in the hope of bolstering up the team's hitting record. Rex has been advanced from seventh in the list to the cleanup position.
Colby has been in the lead for the Maine State Championship, having defeated Bowdoin and Maine. In both of those games, however, the Waterville nine was clearly out-hit, the victories resulting more from errors on the part of their opponents than from any outstanding playing of their own. Yesterday the Colby players dropped their first game of the season, a 9 to 0 shutout administered to them by the University of New Hampshire, a loss that fails to convey any sense of great power in the team
