Harvard's Germans

To the Editor of the CRIMSON:

I personally see no reason why the names of Harvard's German war-dead should not be included in the new Memorial Chapel. But since this has now become impossible, I wish to suggest another way in which we may express our liberality.

If every student, graduate, and friend of the University who sincerely believes that Fritz Dauer, Max Schneider, and Kurt Carl Otto Peters sacrificed their lives for what to them was a worthy cause, and that their service to the fatherland was as noble as Harvard's other heroes, was to their countries, then let them each contribute towards a memorial tablet to be place din our Germanic Museum. Surely this idea cannot be rejected as "Inconsistent," "unpatriotic", or "a breach of faith." The Germanic Museum was built largely by gifts from friends of the pre-War Germany, was presented with many valuable works of art by the former Kaiser, and remains today as an outstanding example of the better side of Germany's attempt to spread its "kultur". There could hardly be a more fitting place for such a memorial.

Since the CRIMSON has taken the lead in demanding that Harvard recognize its graduates who died for the enemy, may I suggest that it consent to act as Treasurer of this fund, and that in order to preserve the democracy of the memorial, contributions be limited to one dollar or less. Sincerely,   Eugene Du Bois.
