Taking on its first opponent since the spring trip, the University baseball nine swings into action today against Bates College. The Crimson team rules as a favorite by reason of its 8-1 win over Bowdoin, the latter having defeated Bates last Monday 7-1.

Against Bates last year, Harvard played a wild game, but succeeded in coming out on top 14-9. Ticknor and Marston; opposing moundsmen, issued between them a total of 22 bases on balls.

Devens will probably start the game today, according to Coach Mitchell, but Page and MacHale will be kept in readiness if the fast ball pitcher begins to wobble.

Ticknor, who has just received a shipment of five new bats, will occupy the clean-up position in the batting order. McCaffrey is now lead-off man, Mays having gone into a slump since he broke his favorite hickory.

Berry, Flynn, Heddericg, and Marston are the only Bates players who were in regular action last year. This will be the second game for the visitors this season.

Des Roches, regular Crimson third baseman, is missing from the lineup as his knee which was sprained during the vacation campaign has not yet recovered.
