"Roughly $400,000 Will be Used to Furnish the New House Units," Says Purchasing Agent--Quota for Kitchens Largest

Roughly $400,000 will be spent in furnishing for next fall the five new Houses, Eliot, Adams, Leverett, Winthrop, and Kirkland, according to a statement made yesterday by W. G. Morse '99, University Purchasing Agent.

Of this sum the largest portion, $145,000, will go for equipment to be used in the kitchens and dining rooms. Coming to $82,000, the furnishings of the dormitory rooms will cost the University only about half the first amount. Next in magnitude comes the $66,000 to be spent on common rooms and libraries for the various Houses, while miscellaneous items will claim $65,000.

There will be very little difference in the interior of the rooms from those in Dunster and Lowell Houses as furnished this year. Approximately $110 is to be used in furnishing each room with a best, chiffonier, three chairs, desk, book case, and a table. The furniture will be the same for each room with the exception of the table, which will be varied slightly in shapes.

Eliot House will have chinaware with a red canion, design on if, a Chinese design over 2,000 years old. Black and white after-dinner coffee cups and saucers have also been ordered. Adams House will have a picture of the Yard on its crockery similar to the one now used at Lowell House. Kirkland is having a place with a red baud on the rim and the House seal slightly off the center, while Leverett is to have a design especially adapted from one of the famous Spoke patterns. Winthrop House will have one similar to Eliot House, the design being in green.

Furnishings for the common rooms have not yet been ordered. The House masters and the architects are just now in the process of selecting such things as the furniture's draperies, and upholstering goods. Each House will have a different interior for its common room but approximately the same amount will be spent for all of them. Within certain limits the masters have a completely free hand in selecting all the furnishings for their private houses.
