More books will be available for everyone in the University than ever before, when the House Plan goes into full effect next year, investigation has revealed. The present plans involve the addition of 35,000 new books, which will be evenly divided between the five new houses.
The libraries in both John Winthrop House and Leverett House well be remodelled from the present dining rooms in Standish and McKinlock Halls. In Standish, shelves will be constructed along the walls, and the present serving rooms will become the stacks. The decoration in the interior will not be substantially changed, although it will probably be repainted.
In McKinlock the changes will be practically the same, except that book-cases do not have to be constructed, as they already exist behind the present paneling remaining from the time when the dining room used to be the Freshman library. These rooms will be furnished to accommodate about 45 men.
The Eliot House library will resemble the library in Dunster House in decorations, except that the shelves will be lower, and will not have to be reached by ladder.
In Adams House the library will be on the second floor, approximately at the point where the two wings, composed of the dining room and the common room, converge.
Approximately $15,000 has been allotted to each house, outside of individual gifts, and this has been divided between the various fields, the same divisions for all the houses.
