BASEBALL SQUAD IS PARED BY MITCHELL

Devens, MacHale, Page, and Ticknor are Among Pitchers -- Sheldon and Fincke Behind the Bat

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In the initial cut of the season yesterday, Coach Mitchell, pared his University baseball squad down to 46 men. Retaining 14 pitchers and six catchers, Mitchell will continue indoor practice for several weeks.

So far the men have been receiving only batting and fielding practice in the cage, with each infield getting a separate workout. The veteran outfielders are for the time getting warmed up in the infield. The coach has been showing his candidates the finer points of throwing the ball and tagging a runner.

For the pitcher's mound, Charles Devens '32, W. H. MacHale '31, W. K. Page. '31, and B. H. Ticknor '31, all letter men, seem to be the most promising candidates. Reginald Fincke '32 and J. E. Sheldon '32 are the outstanding contestants for the catcher's position, with S. L. Batchelder '31 still engaged in hockey.

Likely candidates for the keystone sack are G. A. Donaldson '31 or Captain E. H. McGrath '31; on second base E. A. Jantzen '32 and R. D. Kiernan '33 of last year's Freshman team, and at third E. J. Des Roches '31 or P. A. Ketchum '31.

Captain McGrath '31 and A. F. Dana '33 are close competitors for short stop. W. B. Wood, Jr. '32, and E. A. Mays '32 have not yet reported. No outfield practice has thus far been possible.

The squad is as follows: pitchers: Phillip Boyer, Jr. '33, Devens, P. G. Gorman '32, H. T. Lanier '32, MacHale, J. F. McJennett '33, Page, P. M. Sidel '31, Solomon Smith '31, E. D. W. Sprague '31, H. W. Taylor '33, Ticknor, F. O. White '32, Eliot Wylie '31.

Catchers: R. H. Armstrong '31, Batchelder, Fincke, R. C. Laughlin '31, Sheldon, T. J. Valenski '33.

First basemen: S. S. Adams '33, Donaldson, McGrath, Wood.

Second basemen: W. A. Adler '33, Jantzen, J. R. Leonard '33, M. W. Powell '33.

Third basemen: Warren Delano '31, Des Roches, Ketchum, J. W. Putnam '33, H. W. Snider '32, Hamilton Thacher '33.

Short stops: Dana, D. A. Dudley '32, Kiernan, Max Kutzer '32, Mays.

Outfielders: B. H. Bassett '31, L. B. Belknap '31, F. B. Campana '33, A. J. Lupien '32, F. P. Locke '33, K. A. McCaffrey '33, J. L. Rex '31.
