Construction on the three new Wigglesworth dormitories between Widener Library and Massachusetts Avenue is progressing rapidly. Outside work is practically done, and the final plastering is being finished inside. According to the superintendent in charge of the work, the dormitories should be ready to occupy by June 15.
The three buildings, called A, B, and C, have been under construction since the last part of September. A and C dormitories, respectively at the Harvard Square and Quincy Street ends of the Yard, are nearest to completion. Inside plastering in C will be finished, and window sashes will be set in place by Monday. Work will be completed to an equal degree in A hall Thursday, while B dormitory, the central and largest of the three, is about two weeks behind its mates.
A telephone cable from the Wigglesworth dormitories to University Hall has been connected at the exchange in the latter building and only awaits interior finishing to be completely installed in the new buildings. The cable runs under the Yard in tunnels already built for the existing telephones. Electricity, gas, and water will be taken from Massachusetts Avenue mains. A long underground tunnel for such pipes connects the three dormitories.
Inside, the new buildings, which will house one-seventh of next year's Freshman Class, will be similar to Lowell and Dunster Houses. Each entry has its stone staircase, with a narrow iron railing, as in most of the new buildings by the river. Walls in the rooms will be rough-finished and painted instead of being papered. Each suite will have a fireplace in the study, and showers in place of tubs are provided in all bath rooms.
