About 40 candidates for the University and Freshman golf teams attended the first meeting of the season yesterday. Announcement was made that there will be a University second team this year. Actual competition for places on the teams will begin after the spring vacation.
At present, prospects for a successful season are unusually propitious. All six of the members of last year's team are back, in addition to the following regulars of the 1930 Freshman team: S.G. Sleeper '33, H.G. Bourneuf '33, and R.L. Kimbrough '33. With an additional year of experience behind it, the team should be able to better last year's record of 11 victories and two defeats. As has been the case in previous years, the home matches will be played at the Belmont Spring Club.
In addition to the regular schedule of matches with the other eight members of the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association, the Crimson representatives are slated to play several nonleague contests.
Four trips are to be made this season, Hanover and Princeton being on the itinerary for some of the intercollegiate matches, while the Olympia Fields Club in Chicago will be the scene of the National Intercollegiate Tournament from June 22 to 29.
Last year the Harvard golfers finished third to Princeton and Yale in the Eastern Intercollegiate League, and trailed the strong Nassau sextet in the team competition for the National Championship. In the tournament for the national individual championship, three Harvard men qualified Captain Philips Finlay '31, J.B. Baldwin '31, and C.S. Eaton '32. Finlay and Eaton distinguished themselves by remaining in the competition until the semi-finals. Finlay has also qualified in the National Amateur Tournament four times in five years and once remained in that contest until the semi-final match when he was defeated by the invincible Bobby Jones.
The Harvard schedule for the Eastern Intercollegiates follows: May 2, Holy Cross at Boston: May 9, Dartmouth at Banover: May 15, Pennsylvania at Princeton: May 16, Georgetown at Princeton, Princeton at Princeton: May 22, Brown at Boston: May 23, Williams at Boston: May 23 or 30. Yale at either Boston or New Haven.
