LUDLAM AND BEARD WIN PRELIMINARIES IN EPEE

Foils and Sabre Eliminations of Fencing Meet Will be Finished Today--Finals to be Held on Friday

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Upsets and the absence of strong contestants from the graduate schools featured the opening of the preliminaries of the University fencing championship meet yesterday afternoon in the Fencing Room of the New Indoor Athletic Building K. R. Ludlam '33 and J. H. Beard '34 were the winners in the epee preliminaries, while the competition for winners of the foils' preliminaries will be finished today.

For a Freshman and a Sophomore to be competing in the finals of the University fencing championship is an unusual event. No strong graduate contenders for the title entered the epee competition as is usually the case. The foils elimination got well under way yesterday and will be finished today, while the complete sabre preliminaries are expected to be held today. The finals in all three weapons will be held Friday afternoon.
