CRIMSON ISSUES A CALL TO FRESHMEN NEXT WEEK

Next Wednesday evening, February 11, at 7.15 o'clock, members of the Freshman Class will have their first opportunity of competing for the News, Business, and Photographic departments of the CRIMSON when a meeting will be held for all interested in the competitions in the President's office of the CRIMSON building, 14 Plympton Street. At the same time, Sophomores will have their first chance to try for the Editorial department. All of the competitions will be of about eight weeks in duration, instead of nine, as those of previous years.

Candidates for the News department daily gather and write the news of the University. During the first week of the competition the work is light, consisting mainly of learning how to procure news and write it in proper form. The candidate is given a chance to become acquainted with his work and surroundings before settling down to serious work. After the first few days regular assignments are given, which are to be covered every day. These assignments are the most consistent source of news, but candidates also get "scoops", stories outside their regular assigned fields.

Photographic and Business

The competition in the Photographic department consists mainly of taking pictures of people and events connected with the University. No unusual photographic experience is required, and cameras are furnished by the CRIMSON. Business candidates are instructed in getting and planning advertisements. They are thus given opportunity to learn the advertising business through practical experience, and to make valuable acquaintances among business men in Boston and Cambridge.

The Editorial candidates write one editorial a day, about events in the College, and of general interest. In this way candidates are given a chance to express their opinions on current news, to learn the editorial style of writing.
