E. H. McGrath '31 and B. H. Ticknor, II '31 were awarded the Wendell Bat and the Wingate Cup, respectively, at the annual dinner of the University baseball team last evening at the Varsity Club.
The awards were presented to the two players by W. T. Reid '01, who also spoke on the graduates' relation to baseball. After the presentation of the trophies both McGrath and Ticknor spoke. Coach F. G. Mitchell also spoke on the prospects for this year's team.
The Wendell Bat, donated by Barrett Wendell, Jr. '02, was awarded to McGrath as the best offensive player of the preceding season. McGrath totalled the most points in sacrifice hits, stolen bases, runs, and safe arrivals to first base. Ticknor received the Wingate Cup, donated by D. J. P. Wingate '14, as a result of his selection as the best all-round player of the preceding season.
McGrath, who has been playing on the College Humor baseball team in the West Indies during the Christmas Recess, is captain of this year's nine. He has been most prominent in the capacity of short stop and second base, and batted an average of .292. McGrath also won the bat last year.
Ticknor, who was captain of the University eleven last fall, and who was also named a member of the All-American football team for the second time, was equally as prominent on the diamond last season. He led the team in batting honors with a batting average of .359. His most successful game was with Dartmouth when his home run hit, bringing in two runs, won the contest.
The University baseball team begins its season officially with the first meeting of the squad, next Tuesday. Only two members of last year's team were lost to the squad by graduation. They are H. L. Huxtable '30, and Captain F. E. Nugent '30, both of whom graduated last June.
