In the form of a permanent Adviser in Religion with regular office hours. Harvard has a "noble experiment" all its own. The Reverend T. L. Harris, a graduate of Cambridge University, is the nucleus of the new plan which was initiated this fall.
The fact that little or no publicity has attended the inauguration of the new post accounts for the fact that few students know of it, but this is no indication that progress is lacking. In his office on the third floor of Wads-worth House, the Reverend Mr. Harris stated yesterday that the success of the plan had been above his expectations. He also emphasized the fact that he does absolutely nothing to encourage students to come in, but that he merely keeps his office hours.
The work of the adviser is of two kinds. He acts as counsel to students in difficulties and assists in coordinating the efforts of the various church organizations in relation to the University. In his capacity as a student adviser on matters of all sorts he has no connection with the Dean's office.
A side issue which has assumed importance is his cooperation with A. L. Putnam '20, consultant on careers. Students, who are in doubt as to whether a profession is of the kind they should approve or whether it is worth entering, considered from the ethical stand-point, consult the adviser in religion. He also works with Dr. H. A. Shaw, the University psychiatrist.
Positions similar to this are in existence at Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth, where they are regarded with favor. If the plan proves to be a success this year it will be continued next year. At present the Reverend Mr. Harris does not devote his entire time to the post. His office hours are 11 to 12.30 o'clock in the morning and 2.30 to 3.30 o'clock in the afternoon.
