With only two of last year's letter-men back for the coming season, competition for berths on the team this season will be very keen. Formal practice, preceded by ten days of informal work, began on November 23. Thirty-four men are now out for the Freshman team, while the University squad has grown until about 45 candidates are competing for the eight places.
Coach Clifford Gallagher's program calls for elimination bouts before each meet to decide the members of the team. The first of these preliminaries is to take place beginning on December 10. Coach Gallagher is not unduly optimistic over the prospects, but is bringing the team along steadily for the first meeting with Technology on Friday, December 18. Leading contenders for the University team are Captain Arthur Klein '32 in the 125 pound class; Howard Frankel '34, 115 pound class; Albert Bronstein '33 and J. B. Gilbert '33, 135 pound class; D. B. Dorman '32, 145 pound class; O. E. Goddard '33, 155 pound class; M. A. Keyser '33, 165 pound class; R. G. Ames '34, 175 pound class; and Gridley Barrows '34, W. S. Burrage '33, and H. C. McClees '34 in the unlimited class. Klein, Ames, and J. H. Crandon '33, who is not coming out for wrestling on account of laboratory work, were all undefeated in last year's competition, when Ames was the only Freshman to win his match against Yale. Goddard is the only other member of last year's University team besides Klein to be out again so far this year, while Barrows, Bronstein, and Keyser all wrestled on their Freshman teams. Barrows was captain of the 1934 grapplers.
The only Freshman with an impressive record is R. W. Emory '35, who holds the 165 pound interscholastic wrestling championship for the state of Maryland.
