A strong Harvard class team will defend its championship in the Intercollegiate Class League today when the annual tournament begins in New York City. The Crimson will have to defeat the best chess players from Dartmouth, Yale, and Princeton to keep the Challenge Trophy which it gained last year after a long and difficult struggle.
Harvard will meet Dartmouth in the first round with confidence inspired by its win over the Green on November 7 by a 5 to 1 score. To the quintet which brought this victory: W. A. Beyer '33, V. L. Eaton '34, N. E. Long '32, A. G. Malkan '33, and M. A. Mergentheim '33, three other men--C. J. Tanenbaum '34, R. B. Thomson '32, and B. I. Wechsler '34, will be added, constituting a formidable team. In the second round they pit their skill against Yale and in the third round, against Princeton, always playing the black pieces.
This will be the thirty-ninth chess tournament contested for this trophy. The Cup was awarded by two Princeton enthusiasts of the royal game. Of the 33 contests Columbia has won 13, Harvard 11; Yale, three; and Princeton, two. Columbia gained permanent possession of the trophy some years ago and has since dropped out of the League.
A. S. Jameson of Yale and T. R. Schoomaker '12, have charge of the tournament and F. J. Marshall. United States Champion, will be referee. Play will begin at the Marshall Chess Club at 1 o'clock. The time limit will be 18 an hour.
