About fifty men turned out for boxing at the preliminary meeting held yesterday in the indoor Athletic Building Coaches Lamar and Fiordalisi spoke briefly, announcing the changes in plans for practice this year and outlining the course which will be pursued in regard to intercollegiate boxing.
Last year marked Harvard's first experiment with intercollegiate competition in this sport and it has been decided that several readjustments will be necessary in the policy adopted at that time. It is estimated that the number of men participating in boxing dropped off by approximately 50 per cent last year as a result of the emphasis on intercollegiate meets, and the new arrangements are designed to encourage the intramural phase of the sport.
There will be no outside meets this year for the Freshman boxers. Instead the first year men will practice daily from 3 to 5 o'clock in Hemenway Gymnasium, and an intramural schedule will be arranged.
As far as the University boxers are concerned, all men will practice together from 2 to 4 o'clock for the next few weeks. Before the beginning of the season the University squad will be separated from the other men and will practice at a different hour during the remainder of the year. In addition, the members of the University squad will be ineligible for the University boxing championships.
These steps have been taken by the committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports at Harvard with a view to allowing the continuance of intercollegiate competition for the University team with out discouraging intramural boxing.
