RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS SOUGHT BY MEN HERE

Five students from Harvard have applied for Rhodes scholarships this year in the Massachusetts district, it was announced yesterday by Assistant Professor C. C. Brinton, '19, Secretary of the Massachusetts State Committee. These men do not constitute the whole number of Rhodes applicants from Harvard, however, since under the rules of the Committee students may apply either from here or from their own state. Those who have applied in Massachusetts are: M. V. Anastos '31, Loftus Becker '32, D. D. Boyden '32, J. W. Kelleher '31, and S. D. Pollard '32. Some of those who have filled applications elsewhere are: R. N. Clark'32, from Georgia, M. S. Knowles '34, from Florida, W. M. Southgate '31, from Alabama, and Oscar Sutermeister '32, from Kansas.

On December 5 the competition will be held for all those who filed applications in this state. From this number the Committee of Selection will choose two men to appear before the New England district committee a week later. Four men will then be finally chosen to represent this district as Rhodes scholars at Oxford.

The scholarships carry an annual stipend of 400 pounds a year, for two or three years study, one of which may be spent away from Oxford. This clause is frequently invoked to allow a year of study at some Continental university without losing the aid of the scholarship.

Scholastic achievements are the primary basis for selection of Rhodes scholars, but other factors are taken into consideration, especially character, college activities; and physical vigor.
