R. H. Bond '19, former Harvard athlete and former assistant Freshman football coach, was yesterday appointed head of the Harvard Freshman football team for next year. He succeeds A. E. French, Jr. '29, who had coached the first year team for the past two years, assuming his position immediately after his graduation from college.
The appointment of Bond does not come as an exact surprise since it was rumored that French would not continue in his position. His team have both had poor seasons, neither one of the elevens winning a game. Bond was backfield coach for the first year teams from 1924 to 1929 under both the Casey and the French regimes. He was head coach of the Brown Freshman team this past season. His athletic career in college was interrupted by the war but he played on the 1916 gridiron team and caught on the 1919 baseball nine.
Bond's assistants for the coming year will be Madison Sayles '27, backfield coach, and F. A. Pickard '29 end coach. A line coach is yet to be named. Sayles and Pickard merely retain the position they held this past season.
The following assistant University coaches have been appointed by the Committee for the season of 1931: A. W. Sampson '09, backfield coach; W. A. Cleary '14, line coach; E. H. Bradford '26, end coach; B. H. Ticknor '31, assistant line coach; N. V. Nelson '18, backfield coach; V. P. Kennard '09, kicking coach.
The above coaches, with the exception of Nelson, have previously been announced as members of the staff, subject to the approval of the Committee, which has now been attained. Nelson was halfback on the 1919 football team; and has had coaching experience at Harvard with Freshman and second University teams.
A further announcement made by the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports at Harvard has fixed the following games as the Freshman football schedule for 1931: On October 10, the team will play Andover at Andover; October 17, they will play Exeter at home; the following Saturday they will play Worcester Academy at Worcester; October 31, a game has been scheduled with Dartmouth at Hanover; November 6, there will be a game with the Harvard Seconds, and on Saturday, November 14, with Yale
