Last night in the New Indoor Athletic Building the University basketball team overcame a sturdy quintet from the United States Coast Guard Academy in a game which until the last five minutes of play appeared to be a defeat for the Crimson. Winning 11 points in a little over seven minutes the Harvard players ate up the seven-point lead of the Cadets, and scooped victory from disaster, with a final score of 32 to 28.
The game last night, which was probably the most exciting yet played on the new floor, opened slowly, with both teams fighting for a break. The entire first half was closely contested, fortune rather favoring the naval men, but Harvard saved a tie score at the half by a successful foul shot, which left the tally at 14 to 13 in favor of the University.
At the beginning of the second half the navigators returned with a rush which swept the Crimson men off their feet, and clustered them around their own basket, working desperately to stave off the bombardment to which it was subjected. The University hoopsters called a succession of times-out, finally succeeding in working up a tardy resentment which returned the Cadets to their own territory. Loose and fast playing was the order of the day, the audience appreciating vociferously. With a heavy lead, and time, to fight against, the Crimson men took the situation in hand, and caged every shot. By the time the final whistle blew, Harvard had a satisfactory margin.
