With a record of only eight wins as compared to ten losses the Harvard baseball team will take the field against the Rhode Island State nine this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The visitors have lost only two games this year but they have not faced the competition that the Crimson forces have come up against.
The Rhody Reds lost to Brown 5 to 1 about a month ago and since then have dropped one to the Connecticut Aggies. Brown also beat the Crimson, in fact two times, so the game this afternoon ought to be one between fairly evenly matched teams.
Slightly Altered Lineup
Coach Mitchell will send a somewhat shifted lineup on the field today because some of the players are busy with final examinations. Ticknor is one of the men who will not play and Huxtable will replace him temporarily in the center garden. Ticknor's place in the heart of the batting order will be taken over by Lupien, who has also replaced him as the leading hitter of the team. There is also a possibility that Mays, who was injured in the Penn game over a month ago, will get in for a few innings today. The Sophomore second sacker reported for practice on Monday and has been taking light workouts since then. With Nugent at second there is the possibility that Mays will go center field for part of the game.
Just who will pitch for Harvard today was not known yesterday but Coach Mitchell intimated that White may get the assignment. He has done very little pitching in the regular games this year but when he has gone in he has always been effective. If White does not do the hurling the burden will fall on MacHale for Devens is being held over for the Holy Cross game Saturday and Page will be absent because of an examination.
Coach Ralph Keany of the visitors, former Bates athletic luminary, will pitch either one of his aces, Ackroyd or Goff, against the Crimson, with the emphasis on the former. Goff has won five and lost only one game and when he does not pitch guards the initial sack. Ackroyd is the first four letter man that Rhode Island State has ever had and besides is a versatile ball player. He has pitched, caught, and also alternated with Goff at first base this year.
Besides today's game Harvard still has four scheduled contests remaining before the games with Yale during Commencement Week. The Crusader game on Saturday is the stiffest one left but beside facing the leaders of Eastern baseball Harvard must also face the team that led the college nines at the start of the season, Tufts, before winding up its schedule. The Quantico Marines also call for a game in which they will be looking for revenge because of the defeat administered to them by Harvard on the Southern trip.
The annual game with the Alumni will be played this year on June 10 and at that time quite a few of the Harvard diamond stars of years back are expected to face Coach Mitchell's 1930 outfit. George Owen '23 and H. W. Burns '28, captain of the team two years ago, are two likely players for the "old guard" team that day
