VERNON MUNROE NAMED CAPTAIN OF 1931 TRACK TEAM

Vernon Munroe Jr. '31, of New York City, quarter miler and sprinter, was yesterday elected captain of the 1931 Harvard track forces when the lettermen of this year's team met for the last time. At the same time Henry Chalfaut '31, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was named to succeed C. E. Galston '30 as manager of the team.

Munroe, who succeeds T. F. Mason '30, dash man, as captain, was the outstanding Junior on the team this year and came into nation-wide prominence as a result of the anchor quarter mile that he ran in the mile relay at the Penn relay carnival this Spring. He also ran on the indoor mile relay team that set a new record for the distance this Winter.

After the Penn games it was thought that Munroe was destined for a great season on the track this year but, after winning the 440 under wraps in the Greater Boston Meet, he aggravated an injury while winning his event against Dartmouth at Hanover and had to retire for the remainder of the season. He was thus forced to sit on the sidelines during the two objective meets of the season, that against Yale and the Intercollegiates. Had he been able to run in either of these last two meets he would have had a chance to run against Engle, Yale star, in what would have been the feature of either of the two meets.

Munroe prepared for Harvard at Eexter where he captained the track team in his senior year, winning the quarter mile in the Harvard Interscholastics that year. He also captained the Harvard Freshman team in 1928. Munroe is also a member of the Student Council and just last week was elected its president.

The team that Munroe will captain next year has as its nucleus the mainstays of this year's aggregation, which was one of the better track teams gathered together by Coach Farrell. Only six lettermen will be lost by graduation, namely. Captain Mason, Nissen, Hennessy, Cummings, Mardulier, and Rowe There is also a possibility that Youcky, who is only listed as a Junior at present, will also graduate this year.

Of those remaining over for next year the most prominent probably are the two Harvard winners in the Intercollegiates on Saturday, Record and Sutermeister. Then there is a long list of distance men, of whom the Crimson always has a decidedly above average crop, returning headed by Hallowell and having Cobb. Pearson, Fobes, Estes, Fox, and Barrie to swell the total. In the sprints there will be Hawes and Watkins while Kuehn also returns to take care of the high jump and shot put.
