Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
The Harvard baseball team lost its fourth in a row Saturday when it was outplayed by Holy Cross, 6 to 2, before a crowd estimated at 4500 on Fitton Field at Worcester. Devens held the Crusaders to only eight hits, but they were bunched in the first, four innings while Harvard's clouts were well scattered, with the result that the Crimson's only two tallies were the result of long drives, Ticknor's home run in the third inning and Wood's triple in the eighth.
Crusaders Start Early
Holy Cross did its scoring in the early part of the game. In each of the first three innings the Purple batsmen drove a run across the plate and in the fourth they sewed up the game with three more tallies.
The Crusaders' run-getting commenced in the opening inning when Devens walked Fisher, the first man up. He was advanced by Dougherty's sacrifice and scored when Shevlin sent a hard hit ball to McGrath who was unable to handle it.
In the third frame Ticknor circled the bases on his long drive to deep center. In Holy Cross's time at but, however, Dougherty knocked a triple to center field and when Bassett muffed Ticknor's throw-in, it was good for another run. The third was the big inning for the home team. Devens started by striking out Farrell. Marshall then got a free pass to first and Robert popped out to McGrath. With two out, Fisher, Dougherty, and Shevlin singled successively to put three men across the plate.
Harvard Threatens Once
The Crimson threatened the leaders only once during the game. In the eighth, what appeared to be a rally for the Crimson started. McGrath lead off with a single. He was forced at second when Ticknor tapped a slow one to short. Then Wood connected for a triple along the third base line scoring Ticknor and ending Harvard's tallying for the afternoon.
The next engagement for the Harvard team will take place on Soldiers Field Wednesday when the Rhode Island State nine invades the Crimson diamond.
