Harvard Third in I. C. 4A. Meet Dominated by Pacific Coast Stars

Record Places in High, Low Hurdles While Sutermeister Wins Pole Vault

Last Saturday on Soldiers Field it was once more conclusively proved that California's smiling climate is the foster parent of track and field champions when the tanned members of the Southern California and Leland Stanford teams ran away with the 54th annual meet of the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America.

The Southern California performers, scoring in 11 of the 15 events, piled up a total of 44 1-2 points, while their geographical compatriots from Leland Stanford amassed 36 1-4 points. Harvard, with point scorers in the pole vault, hammer, mile, half mile, high and low hurdles, and high jump, led the track forces of the East by a sizeable margin with a total of 23 1-2 points.

Three Records Shattered

Three record-breaking efforts and one record-equalling performance were added to the further credit of the Westerners. Krenz and Rothert, Stanford wonder weight-men, set new meet marks in the discus and shot, and Churchill of California followed their example with his heave in the javelin. Frank Wykoff, the sprinting sophomore star from U. S. C., equalled the I. C. A. A. A. A. record of 9 7-10 seconds in the 100-yard dash.

Although the stars from across the continent dominated the meeting when it came to the final reckoning up of point totals, there were plenty of examples of Eastern prowess on the cinders and in the jumping pits. George Bullwinkle, the astounding and phenomenal middle-distance ace from the College of the City of New York, put on an exhibition that rivals any performance made at these meets since John Paul Jones carried off both the mile and half mile titles nearly 20 years ago.

Bullwinkle led N. P. Hallowell '32 to the tape by two yards in the mile in the excellent time of 4 minutes, 18 4-5 seconds, and then came back an hour later to place two yards behind David Cobb '31 to take a third in the half. Cobb ran a well-judged race to place second in the 880, although he was nearly 15 yards behind the winner. Russell Chapman of Bates, who breasted the worsted in the superb time of 1 minute, 52 2-5 seconds.

Sutermeister Does 13 Ft., 6 In.

Oscar Sutermeister '32 added five points to the Crimson total when he won the pole vault from the largest field of 13-foot vaulters ever brought together in this country. Sutermeister's winning effort of 13 feet, 6 inches, sets a new Harvard record, although it is half a foot short of the meet record and almost 8 inches shy of the world mark.

E. E. Record '32 surprised by winning the high hurdles from a distinguished field in 14 8-10 seconds, but his victory in this event cost him a good place in the low hurdles, where more had been expected of him than in the highs. P. N. Vouckx '31 bettered his Friday position in the hammer throw to take third while G. W. Kuehn '31 returned to form in the high jump to tie for third at 6 feet, 1 inch.
