All doubts as to whether the University polo team will compete in the Intercollegiate Polo Tournament in New York City at the end of this week were dispelled yesterday, with the announcement by Captain F. D. Sharp, polo coach, that the Harvard poloists would journey to New York on Friday to open the tournament with a game with Princeton Saturday night. It was not known whether the authorities would enter the team in this year's tourney because of its mediocre record.
Last year's team was successful in the intercollegiate division, defeating the Pennsylvania Military Academy in the final contest, by the score of 6 1-2 to 6. Several of the players on the championship team were lost, however, by graduation and the total handicap of the trio is four goals, this year, a drop of ten from last year's amount.
The University team has had a disappointing season, winning only one of the eleven games which it played, that with the 110th Cavalry: It has been defeated by the 101st Field Artillery, the Freebooters, twice, the Lancers, the Cincinnati Riding Club, Army, twice, the 107th Cavalry, of Cleveland, and Yale, twice. In the last game of the regular season, however, that with Yale last Saturday, the team reached its greatest height of the season and Coach Sharp expects a better coordinated team to enter the tournament than has been seen during the previous games.
The Princeton trio, too, has had a poor season, having been beaten by Yale, West Point, and the Pennsylvania Military Academy. Those announced to represent the Orange and Black are T. G. Firestone, James Lemp, William Post 2nd, J. M. Doubleday, and E. J. Freeman.
