E. B. Ward '30 and M. T. Hill '32 will represent the University in the fourth annual invitation intercollegiate indoor tennis tournament for the Larned Cup to be held at Cornell University today and tomorrow. Ward is going in place of Captain Arthur Ingraham, Jr. 30, who although originally slated to go, is prevented by an examination today from making the trip.
Twelve colleges including Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, Princeton, and Amherst have been invited to compete for this cup which was first offered in 1927 as a memorial to the late William A. Larned seven times national singles tennis champion.
Seven standard courts on the floor of the drill hall at Cornell will be the scene of the tournament when play begins at 9.30 o'clock today. All preliminary matches will be completed today, leaving the semi-finals for tomorrow morning, and the finals for tomorrow afternoon.
There will be a doubles as well as a singles tournament. The winner of the singles championship will have his name inscribed permanently upon the Larned cup, while several silver replicas will be awarded to the winners and the runners-up in both the singles and doubles tournaments. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to the members of the teams finishing respectively first, second, and third.
Under the leadership of J. F. W. Whitbeck '27, the University tennis team won the tournament in 1927. In 1928 the University finished third, while last year Harvard did not enter the tournament.
