A deft shot from the stick of R. F. G. Giddens ocC., reinstated Crimson hockey star, was the deciding factor in a closely fought game played at the Garden last night between Harvard and the University Club. The final goal which put the score at 4 to 3 in favor of the local skaters, was made with about two minutes of an overtime period to play.
One what looked like an offside play, Giddens took the puck from Wood near the blue line and, cleverly eluding an opposing defender, flipped in into the right corner of the net. It was an outstanding piece of work by Harvard's Canadian flash, but it put an end to a game of what was for the most part uninteresting hockey.
Fast skating and a few examples of clever stick work were all that saved last night's encounter from being one of the season's dullest. The Cambridge coach, with Giddens back in harness, was obviously experimenting with his various forward line combinations, while the Boston team was handicapped by its lack of coordinated practice. The approaching tilts with the Yale sextet must still be regarded in the light of a rather mediocre record, despite the fact that many Crimson ice followers had hoped for a sudden reversal of form with the return of Giddens to the University lineup.
The forward wall which coach Stubbs seemed to be experimenting with last night was composed of Giddens and Cross, wings, and Wood, center.
