The 1934 Freshman Debating Council will be organized at a meeting to be held in the Gore Hall Common Room tomorrow at 8 o'clock. At this time the steering committee will he elected and will lay plans for the coming season. A large turnout is expected as debating is becoming more popular with Freshmen each year. Several money prizes are available for Freshman competition and the schedule of meetings embraces a Harvard-Yale-Princeton triangular debate and several trips to other colleges.
At the meeting F.C. Packard '20 assistant professor of Public Speaking will address the candidates for the Freshman teams on the subject of the prizes offered Freshmen in speaking during the year.
"Participation on the first year team provides the best training possible for the University team which tours the South and makes trips covering over 3000 miles during the season," stated P.C. Reardon '32, manager of the University debating team.
The University Debating Council is preparing for the annual fall meeting with the New Jersey Law School in Newark. The subject in this debate is: Resolved, That the United States should recognize Soviet Russia. The debate will be carried out with split teams, a regular feature of this meeting.
Cornell University comes here on December 2. to debate with Harvard on a subject as yet unannounced. The University squad has arranged a debate on the relative merits of public and private control of electric power with St. John's College. to be held in Annapolis. Maryland.
