BUILDING EXPENSES CAUSE DECREASE IN SURPLUS OF H. A. A.

A drop of $124,210.92 in the excess of income over expenses for the Harvard Athletic Association for the year 1929-30 as compared with the year 1928-29 was revealed yesterday in the report of henry L. Shattuck, treasurer of Harvard College, In his report to the Board of Overseers for the 12 months ending June 30, 1930.

A comparison of receipts for the association during the same period with the previous twelvemonth in 1928-29, showed an increase of more than $212,000; expenses increased in 1929-30 over the earlier twelvemonth by approximately $283,000.

Building Expenditures increase

The difference in the surplus of the Athletic Association is due to the increase in the item "Permanent Improvements, Grounds and Buildings" which was $226,579.82 last year as against $19,581.02 for the preceding year. These improvements include permanent line stands and portable stands over the running track in the stadium.

Team expenses for all major sports except crew were slightly greater than the 1928-29 level, but they remain below the figures for 1927-28. Minor sport teams and the Physical Education Department expenses rose by about $32,000.

Football Only Paying Sport

Football was the only sport that paid for itself, having receipts of $693,713.10 and expenses of $126,661.77 which brought the surplus to $567,051.33. Crew was, as usual, the heaviest loser, going into the red for $34,233.75. The deficits of other sports are as follows; baseball, $8988,24; track, $28,355.66; hockey, $4,394.97. The total expenses for athletics, including minor sports, maintenance, and permanent improvements amounted to $845,739.15.
