Piling up a total of six touchdowns against the weary Freshman squad, Coach Horween's team yesterday plunged and thrashed the first year line in a strenuous hour and ten minute scrimmage. Coach French's entire squad of 60 men was unable to stop the Harvard eleven from easily piling up a 37 to 0 count.
At the start of the scrimmage, the University team was given the ball on its own 30-yard line. The team A lineup was unchanged, except that Crickard took the place of Mays at left half back, and Ticknor was out of the scrimmage on account of examinations. After a few plays White was forced to leave the game on account of a bruise, which it is expected will keep him out of the Vermont game on Saturday. Against a stubborn but inferior Freshman eleven the University team easily pushed its way 70 yards for a score, the touchdown being made by Crickard on a lateral from Devens, who afterwards kicked the point.
Next Coach French's charges took the ball on their own 30-yard stripe, but were forced to kick. After a few plays, Wood tried a pass to Harding, but the ball was batted down into the hands of Crickard, who scored on a 40-yard run. Schereschewsky missed the goal. A second time the 1934 team took the ball on its own 30-yard line, was held, and forced to kick. Once more in possession of the ball, Coach Horween's men marched down the field, scoring on a Wood to Harding pass. Schereschewsky missed the goal.
During the remainder of the afternoon's workout, the University team was given the ball on its own 30-yard line, and pushed the Freshmen back the length of the field for another score. The fifth Harvard touchdown came when Horween's team recovered a fumbled punt on the Freshman 40-yard line, and scored after a series of short gains. Batchelder's runs were the feature of the Harvard onslaught, while for the first year men Crane, former Andover captain, at center, was the heart of the defense. The final score was made by Leonard on a lateral from Putnam, a touchdown that made the concluding score 37 to 0.
A light workout will be the order of the day this afternoon, with a 20-minute session tomorrow in view of Saturday's double header. Tickets for the season opener have been sent to 6500 schoolboys, who will view the games from the steel stands. Invitation has also been extended to various legion posts to have their bands at the Stadium in view of the present convention in Boston, but it is not known at present just what bands, if any, will be at the game
