Recent developments in the "Strange Interlude" controversy were twofold: students will circulate a petition today protesting against the ban, and Walter Prichard Eaton '00 will address an open meeting at the Harvard Liberal Club at 7.15 o'clock tonight discussing the situation.
The faculty and members of the University will be given an opportunity to sign the petition both at Leavitt and Peirce's and on Harvard Square. The organizers of the movement acted with the two-fold purpose of protesting against Mayor Nichols' actions, and of endorsing the Guild in its presentation of the play in Quincy on Monday evening. They hope that the petition will offset to a large extent the attacks which have been made on the Guild and "Strange Interlude" by various members of the local clergy.
"Interlude" Won Prize
The petition reads as follows:
"Strange Interlude" has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize by a distinguished jury, and as it has been universally acclaimed as a play of literary and dramatic significance, we, the undersigned, believe that it is of cultural importance, and that we should not be denied the opportunity of seeing it. Therefore we protest against the banning of "Strange Interlude" in Boston, and we unreservedly endorse its production in Quincy."
Mr. Eaton, who addresses the Liberal Club tonight at 66 Winthrop Street is one of the organizers of the Citizen's Committee of Protest in the recent controversy over Mayor Nichols' ban on the Theatre Guild's production of "Strange Interlude" by Eugene O'Neill '15. He is a well-known New York dramatic critic and author.
