New Haven, May 10--In a match characterized by all-around ragged playing on the part of both teams, the Harvard University golf team narrowly defeated the Pennsylvania golfers by a 5 to 4 score here today.
No exceptionally good scores were handed in by either team. In the first match, although Phillips Finlay '31 defeated Brodbeck of Pennsylvania by 1 up, he was evidently not in his usual form.
Tomorrow, the remaining matching between the northern and southern groups of the College Golf League will be played here. In these contests, Harvard will meet Georgetown in the morning and Princeton in the afternoon.
The summary:
Two-somes: Phillips Finlay '31 defeated Brodbeck (P), 1 up; W. P. Arnold Jr. '31 defeated Hanson (P), 4 and 3; Cottart (P) defeated E. B. Murphy '31, 5 and 4; J. W. Filoon '29 defeated Kelly (P), 3 and 2; J. B. Baldwin '30 defeated Leidenthal, 6 and 5; E. O. Johnson '30 defeated Dester (P), 5 and 4.
Foursomes: Brodbeck and Hanson (P) defeated Finlay and Arnold, 1 up, twentieth hole; Cottart and Kelly (P) defeated Murphy and Filoon, 4 and 3; Baldwin and Johnson defeated Luden and Dester, 3 and 1.
The Georgetown and Princeton lineups for tomorrow's matches will be as follows:
